Celebrate Winston-Salem, N.C. city of Arts & Innovation ★ Fostering Innovation At the Center for Creative Economy and Creative Corridors Coalition By Brian cook T 122 october 2012 he “creative economy.” It’s hardly a new term, but it’s become more familiar in recent years with the advances in areas like interactive media and digital technology. But what exactly is it? Definitions vary, of course, though essentially it refers to businesses and organizations that make or market products and services associated with innovation, aesthetics, design, or culture. For local companies in this fast-moving field, there’s a prime resource in the Center for Creative Economy (CCE). Serving the 12-county Piedmont Triad region since 2007, the CCE is a catalyst for innovation and an advocate for creative industries and entrepreneurs, promoting connectivity and job growth. The center brings people, ideas, and resources together to benefit a burgeoning creative sector that includes design, architecture, software, publishing, advertising, art, crafts, fashion, film, performing arts, TV, radio, interactive digital media, gaming, and technology, among others. CCE’s myriad programs and events include seminars such as Triad Design Leadershop; Innovation workshops; Design Link, a regional collaborative; and a quarterly networking event called Creatini where successful local innovators share new product ideas, creative resources, and tips for success. Linking Up The arrival of Linkage Design in the Triad has accelerated the growth of digital design jobs through its partnership with locally based Volvo Trucks North America. Linkage has hired 20 talented designers from across the U.S. and expects to double that number in the next two years; the company finds North Carolina to be very conducive for its business and plans to expand.
