This past summer a graduate of the school, Joe deCastro, took part in a separate training program set up by Volvo and Linkage. He successfully completed the class and is now a candidate for a paid internship at Volvo Trucks. “The CCE provides great value to the work Linkage is developing in the Triad,” says Michael Check, CEO of Linkage Design. “CCE’s connections have helped us quickly assimilate and get to the business of growing design jobs in the region.” “Road Work” Redefined Another natural partner for the CCE, the Creative Corridors Coalition (CCC) works to beautify area bridges and highways. With the slogan “Working Together to Set Winston-Salem Apart,” this community volunteer group has joined forces with the state department of transportation and the city to enhance the appearance of the “built environment” through design, artwork, landscaping, greenways, bike paths, lighting, water, and other elements to emphasize Winston-Salem’s identity as the City of Arts & Innovation. Affected road corridors include the Business stretch of Interstate 40 through the heart of downtown, U.S. Highway 52, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Broad Street, Peters Creek Parkway, and the first phase, the new Salem Creek Connector, which will run from Winston-Salem State University northwest to the Piedmont for more information, visit Triad Research Park and will begin centerforcreativeeconomy.com, creativecorridors.org , or construction in early 2013. linkage-d.com . In the coming months and years, the CCC will be working to forge publicprivate partnerships throughout the community to provide funding for these long-term projects. The schedule gives the CCC time to work collaboratively with the city, state, and community to create a unique identity for Winston-Salem. It’s yet another example of how pooled resources, innovative thinking, and a shared vision can spur the creative economy in some very creative ways. usairwaysmag.com october 2012 123 http://www.centerforcreativeeconomy.com http://www.creativecorridors.org http://www.linkage-d.com http://www.centerforcreativeeconomy.com http://www.creativecorridors.org http://www.linkage-d.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
