They’re all part of research projects related to Motion Capture and Rapid Prototyping at the Center for Design Innovation (CDI). Drawing on Winston-Salem’s thriving design community, the state of North Carolina formed CDI in 2005, funding it through a consortium consisting of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, WinstonSalem State University, and Forsyth Technical Community College. That’s not to say CDI’s work is limited to these three institutions, nor is it purely academic. “We’re interinstitutional within the UNC system,” says director Carol Strohecker. “But we collaborate very broadly.” CDI’s high-tech design work involves additional North Carolina universities and organizations in various states and countries. More important, CDI is interdisciplinary. “That’s where innovation comes from,” she says. “It’s at the boundaries of what we know already.” So, those flapping bats’ wings? They’re actually thermal images taken at 1,000 frames per second. Other high-speed or Motion Capture (MoCap) video cameras can record up to 10,000 frames per second.
