support the fieldwork of a biologist collaborating with a professor of fine arts. Through MoCap, tracking a dancer’s every move can enhance a choreographer’s routine. Using computer graphics, CDI even reconstructed the trajectory of a bullet from a colonial rifle at Old Salem Museum & Gardens, the basis for an exhibition at WSSU’s Diggs Gallery. MoCap can also help a physical therapist analyze a patient’s gait. These diverse applications underscore that the center is also “inter-sectoral.” “We work with businesses and the whole community in pursuit of our research, education, and economicdevelopment mission,” Strohecker explains. Another key process, Rapid Prototyping, generates models of objects such as medical devices and consumer products. For example, the plaster model of the human brain was created from an actual MRI, plotted on a computer with software that shows all axes, and then directed to a printer containing powder instead of paper. So when you press “print,” a fully sculpted form emerges (yes, really!). “We’re spinning out new ideas, new technologies, that we can quickly develop so that someone can use them as the basis of a new Above: Motion product or service, which could become a Capture of Ramon new company, which would lead to new Dickenson “wall walking”; below: jobs,” says Strohecker. “We emphasize gunsmith Gary Rohrer entrepreneurship.” in an image sequence for Ready, Aim . . . The ideas will keep getting bigger when Look! CDI moves to a new four-acre site next fall. In close proximity to the three partnering institutions, the 27,000-square-foot building will feature a soaring space in which to photograph not just one dancer but an entire troupe, open areas for collaborating, and enough outdoor space to perform MoCap in uncontrolled lighting conditions. “We’ll also have a whole new category of technology, having to do with sensors and electronics,” says Strohecker, imagining a future in which electronic clothing activates lighting panels, and “smart” cities deflect traffic with sensors in roads. “We’re advancing the progress of knowledge and the capabilities of people to work with new knowlSuite 2105 Winston Tower 301 North Main Street edge and expand on it,” she muses.
