Celebrate Winston-Salem, N.C. city of Arts & Innovation ★ Local Legacy O By Tara TiTcomBe Piedmont Airlines was born and raised in Winston-Salem. n February 20, 1948, a Douglas DC-3 took off from Wilmington, North Carolina, for Cincinnati, making five stops along the way. It was the first commercial flight of Piedmont Airlines. The rest, as they say, is history. Founded in 1947 by Tom Davis, Piedmont Airlines quickly became one of the nation’s most successful regional carriers. And it all started in Winston-Salem. Davis, a hometown boy fascinated with flying, began selling small planes for a company, which he later turned into Piedmont Aviation. He then developed the commercial aviation division of Piedmont Airlines. “Winston-Salem has a long heritage of developing innovative entrepreneurs in many industries. These were leaders who literally changed their industries and the world,” says Gayle Anderson, president and CEO of the Greater Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce. “Tom Davis stands tall among these business pioneers, and much of the aviation heritage we enjoy today — particularly in logistics and distribution — is a direct result of his efforts.” In the following decades, Davis helped turn Piedmont into a company with 21,500 employees and $2.5 billion in annual revenue. Larger airlines began to notice Piedmont’s success, and in 1987 it was absorbed by USAir (now US Airways). The combined carriers became one of the East Coast’s largest airlines; to this day, Piedmont operates as part of US Airways Express service. Davis’s legacy continues as well. An avid supporter of Wake Forest University, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and the American Lung Association of North Carolina, Davis became synonymous not just with aviation, but also philanthropy.
