It’s the peak of summer for the Southern hemisphere, and that means one thing: Carnival. The four-day event attracts more than half a million foreign visitors and just about all of the six million residents of Rio. Think Mardi Gras times ten. On steroids. The partying starts before and continues long after the official four-day bacchanalia. And why not? Carnival is the last hurrah before Lent — and in literal terms, a farewell to the flesh.
