| UNIVERSITY # SPOTLIGHT | Hollins University readies students for an ever-changing world by blending liberal arts excellence with real-world experience. Kelsey DeForest # Ask Hollins University students Kelsey DeForest and Yafen Liang how attending the Roanoke, Virginia–based women’s college has given them the foundation for a rewarding life, and you can expect their answers to be peppered with words such as “conﬁdence,” “trust,” and especially “leadership.” “Hollins students play a signiﬁcant role in strategic planning and other aspects of directing the university,” says DeForest, president of the Student Government Association. “We are trusted to make decisions. ‘Leader’ is not just a title. We’re actually getting work done.” Liang has complemented her Hollins classroom education with exceptional internships at publishing house Simon & Schuster in New York and Erickson Beamon, a London jeweler that counts ﬁrst lady Michelle Obama and pop-music star Lady Gaga among its admirers. Her work promoting campus activities and serving as president of her junior and senior classes helped her play a key role in each company’s marketing and publicity efforts. “During internship interviews I was asked, ‘You do a lot on campus and inﬂuence a lot of things. Is that normal?’ I said, ‘Absolutely. Hollins offers us responsibility, and we accept it.’ ” Last year, DeForest interned with Betsy Carr, member of Virginia’s House of Delegates and a Hollins alumna. DeForest says the contrast between her experience and that of interns from other colleges was remarkable. “Interns in different legislative ofﬁces told me they typically spent their days delivering coffee and lunch and occasionally answering emails and phone calls. I was counted on to represent Delegate Carr in one-on-one meetings with lobbyists, interest groups, and constituents and report back to her legislative aides. You hear the same from Hollins students who intern in a variety of other organizations, from UBS Financial Services and Estée Lauder to the U.S. Supreme Court — because of our preparation, we receive a phenomenal level of trust.” During her college career, Liang was also actively involved in Hollins’s Batten Leadership Institute, an innovative program dedicated to teaching leadership skills at the undergraduate level that students at other colleges don’t learn until after they’ve entered the workforce. “Batten helps you learn what makes you tick, ﬁnd self-conﬁdence, and understand how to effectively communicate in every situation,” Liang explains, adding that she will be able to apply what she’s learned in Batten to the rest of her life. After graduation, DeForest plans to work in nonproﬁt management, but admits, “I’m not going to be a fund-raiser my entire life; I’m probably going to have ﬁve other careers. Hollins addresses that by giving me the skills and ﬂexibility that are going to help me succeed. I’m going to come out of Hollins with the ability to speak in public, write well, and do research — that’s the value of a liberal arts education. “Hollins makes you feel comfortable in your own skin. I wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world.” NOTABLE ALUMNAE Prominent Hollins alumnae include beloved author of Goodnight Moon Margaret Wise Brown, ABC News White House Correspondent Ann Compton, and Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Trethewey, who has been named U.S. Poet Laureate for 2012–13 by the Library of Congress.
