★ Celebrate Winston-Salem, N.C. | We get lifelong learners in town to experience Old Salem and Reynolda House, and then they discover the downtown and the new energy here. —Marcheta Keefer, visit winston-salem Theatre, or a screening at the independent a/perture cinema. Another thing that Hollywood loves to do in Winston: eat. Film companies have their favorites such as 6th and Vine Wine Bar and Cafe, Bernardin’s Fine Dining, Meridian Mediterranean cuisine, and Willow’s Bistro. And for breakfast, there are two contenders, The Screaming Rooster and Breakfast, Of Course. The foodie scene serves up an ethnic buffet (Mexican, Northern Italian, Thai), alongside fresh seafood and, naturally, barbecue. And like so many U.S. cities, the locavore movement is in full swing. Mozelle’s Fresh Southern Bistro lives up to its name with treats like tomato pie and homemade succotash, and chef Timothy Grandinetti’s menu at Spring House Restaurant is indeed “in cadence with Mother Nature”; just have a look at the kitchen garden. “Winston-Salem is trending upward, and we want to be a part of that,” Grandinetti says. “I think it’s a fantastic dining destination.” Historic Foundation “One of our strongest attractions is our rich history,” says Marcheta Keefer, director of marketing and communications for Visit WinstonSalem. “We get lifelong learners in town to experience Old Salem and Reynolda House, and then they discover the downtown and it’s a confirmation of the new energy here.” None of this new energy, this “Southern Wake-up Call,” should come as a surprise. After all, an artistic sensibility and can-do spirit are embedded in the city’s DNA. Its earliest settlers, a group of Eastern European immigrants called Moravians, built the 18thcentury frontier town that’s preserved today as Old Salem Museum & Gardens. But the Moravians’ legacy doesn’t end there: Old Salem is home to the first piece of classical music composed in America, the oldest continuing brass band, and the fanciful photos (clockwise from top left): courtesy of old salem museum & gardens, shelton vineyards, and the north carolina black repertory company Downtown Cool These celebs feel right at home downtown in a cityscape crowned by the iconic Reynolds Building, a mini Empire State Building that was the model for the real thing in Manhattan. (Each year the Winston building gets a Father’s Day card from its “kid” in the Big Apple.) Unlike many Southern cities, downtown Winston doesn’t close at 5 p.m. And no doubt film crews mix well with the eclectic crowds — button-downs and heels blending seamlessly with mohawks and tattoos — on route to work, to grab a bite, or to quaff a pint at Foothills Brewery. Or maybe they’re off to a gallery crawl in the Arts District, a play at the HanesBrands 58 october 2012 usairwaysmag.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
