Moravian stars that hang in doorways during the holidays. It’s also where women still receive a progressive education at Salem College, the oldest women’s college in the U.S. This kind of forward thinking, coupled with the entrepreneurial energy that the Hanes textile barons and tobacco titan R.J. Reynolds brought to the neighboring burg of Winston, would drive Winston-Salem into the 20th century. Conjoined in 1913 (thus nicknamed the “Twin City” for its dual heritage), the city experienced an industrial boom, becoming a national leader in tobacco and textile manufacturing. Today, it continues to adapt by investing in technology and research, seen in the everexpanding Piedmont Triad Research Park. One of the park’s residents, the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, is adding a new dimension to the word “innovation” by regenerating body parts — yes, really! “A strong arts community goes hand in hand with Winston-Salem’s reputation as a city of innovation,” notes Dr. Anthony Atala, the institute’s director. He says his recruits are as impressed with the city’s array of visual, decorative, and performing arts as they are with its commitment to innovation and a knowledgebased economy. Road Trip! We’ll toast to that in the Yadkin Valley, the state’s first American Viticultural Area, encompassing nearly 40 flourishing wineries — just minutes outside Winston. You can also find local vintages at the Salute! wine festival held downtown every spring. Or follow the example of oenophiles Karen Kluttz and Chuck Nintzel and go directly to the source. “The wonderful thing about the Yadkin AVA is that everybody is experimenting, and by going, you’re participating in that experimentation,” Nintzel says. “It’s an adventure.” The couple appreciates the beauty of the valley’s rolling hills and proximity to Winston. “You can walk around Old Salem and get a loaf of bread at Winkler Bakery to take with you,” Kluttz says, “and then come back to WinstonSalem and have a great meal.” What’s next for the city at the switchboard of your Southern Wake-up Call? A big birthday! Winston is getting ready to ring in its centennial next spring with a parade, a new park, and a special brew prepared by Foothills. But then again, Winston has always been ready: Ready for the next 100 years. Ready for the next big dream, because in The City of Arts and Innovation, there is only possibility.
