★ Celebrate Winston-Salem, N.C. | WFU transformative experiences, and increasingly, help with navigating a career road map with confidence and clarity. The Wall Street Journal recently featured Wake Forest for its national leadership in making personal and career development a critical component of the college experience starting with freshmen. “A key objective of our office is to engage first-year students right at the start of their college experience,” says Andy Chan, vice president of the newly expanded and energized Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD). “We know that introducing first-years to the OPCD’s friendly staff and valuable resources in our office will significantly increase the likelihood of them returning to our office when they need help throughout their college years.” Other relevant initiatives include offering a minor in Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise and engaging faculty in preparing students for life after college. Wake Forest is also leading the national conversation through events such as the “Rethinking Success” conference on campus last spring. The three-day conference, which Chan organized with support from President Nathan Hatch, was a clarion call to top liberal arts schools across the country to sharpen their focus on better preparing students for careers. “Wake Forest has worked hard to create a real ‘College to Community’ that includes faculty, staff, students, alumni, and even parents — a network of people who can help students make real connections to the value of their degree and life after college,” Chan says. Innovative Research Accuse Wake Forest physicist David Carroll of thinking small and he will thank you for it. As the director of the school’s Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials, Carroll works with matter that is tiny in nature but enormous in potential human impact. Take for example Power Felt, a promising new technology hailed by the New York Times Magazine as a top innovation “that will change your tomorrow.” Carroll’s invention locks microscopic carbon nanotubes in a fabric and helps convert body heat into electrical current. Potential uses for the technology include lining car seats to boost battery power or collecting heat By the Stats ■ class of 2011: 92 percent were employed or in graduate school programs within six months of graduation. ■ wfu has graduated 12 rhodes scholars in the last 25 years. ■ more than 60 percent of students study abroad through dozens of programs spanning the globe. with your son, I promise you that we’ll treat him like he’s our own.’ ” After arriving on campus as a freshman, Jordan’s preexisting kidney condition deteriorated — he needed 11 hours of dialysis daily. Jordan and his parents, as well as Coach Walter, soon learned that only a transplant would return Jordan’s life to normal. The coach recalls that when he learned that the waiting list for a donor kidney is often five years, and that 15 people die daily awaiting a kidney, he decided he had to do something. Right away. He got checked and was told his kidney was a perfect match for Jordan. The surgery took place at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. It was a success. Both patients met with the national press to share their extraordinary story. But that celebration hardly compared to Jordan taking to the practice field the following baseball season. “That was the best day of my coaching career by far,” Coach Walter says. “Just to see him back out there and doing what he loves to do.” Fostering Personal and Career Development At a great university, where the investment in a four-year degree is significant, students and parents expect a lot: a top-flight education, Researchers in the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials work with matter that is tiny in nature but enormous in impact. photos by wfu/ken bennett 66 october 2012 usairwaysmag.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
