Carroll’s work is just one illustration among many of the influential research and innovation produced in Wake Forest science labs by both faculty and students alike. Consider biophysics major Brandon Turner, the school’s 12th Rhodes Scholar, who has worked closely for years with professor and computational biophysicist Jacquelyn Fetrow to analyze proteins to aid in the discovery of new drugs. “Brandon’s contributions to my research and to the lab group rival those of graduate students,” says Fetrow, who is also dean of the college. Meanwhile, Paúl Pauca, an associate profes- sor of computer science, along with a team of students created “Verbal Victor,” an iPhone/ iPad app that provides an affordable alternative to expensive communication devices. The app has not only attracted widespread attention, it also spawned a new company called Apps for the Greater Good.
