It’s an accolade that’s 71 years in the making. The heirs of the late R.J. Reynolds Co. President Bowman Gray Sr. took a forward-thinking step when they decided to use a trust fund that he established to relocate Wake Forest’s School of Medicine from Wake Forest, North Carolina, to N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Of course, they had no way of knowing the impact the newly formed academic medical center would eventually have — or how large it would become. Today, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) consists of the clinical health system and tertiary hospitals, the School of Medicine, Piedmont Triad Research Park, and a network of affiliated community-based hospitals, physician practices, and outpatient services. The largest employer in Forsyth County, the Medical Center’s direct and indirect economic benefit to the county, region, and state annually tops $3.8 billion (fiscal year 2011). It’s also a leader in pioneering research — ultimately creating jobs, medical breakthroughs, and an inspiring location for the world-class faculty. Despite all these successes, the institution’s focus remains the same as when it began in 1941: providing patients with exceptional care. “We design all of our programs — whether they’re educational, research, or patient care — with the end game in mind,” says John D. McConnell, M.D., CEO of the Medical Center. “We strive to improve health not just here in Winston-Salem, but literally around the world.” Where Innovation Grows The Piedmont Triad Research Park (PTRP) is a science- and technology-based economic development park set on 200 acres in downtown Winston-Salem. One of the nation’s largest urban life-science facilities, PTRP brings together private companies (such as Inmar Inc., a high-profile technology firm) and leading scientists to achieve pioneering advancements in biotechnology and medicine.
