With more than 100 areas of expertise, the Medical Center provides exceptional medicine for all ages. park’s growth with the opening of Wake Forest Biotech Place, a stunning 242,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art biotechnology research and innovation center. Housed in two fully restored tobacco facilities once owned by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Biotech Place features a number of salvaged historical pieces, including original glass bricks. “Effectively our second campus, PTRP has reached a tipping point,” says McConnell, who revealed that by press time the Medical Center will announce another major expansion: Its Division of Public Health Sciences — ranked fifth in the country — will relocate to PTRP. “Taking PTRP to this level is one of the most exciting things we have going on, not just in the Medical Center, but frankly in North Carolina today,” McConnell says. “By late 2013, there will have been over $200 million of reinvestment into a previously blighted urban center. Not very many other cities in America can tell that story.” All signs point to continued growth, especially given the recent addition of Eric Tomlinson, D.Sc., Ph.D., as PTRP president and WFBMC’s chief innovation officer. The title says it all: “Essentially my role is to promote and lead innovation across the Wake Forest system,” Tomlinson explains. “With 13,500 employees, there’s a great deal of new knowledge and scholarship that’s ripe to be turned into innovative, competitive products.” Tomlinson says PTRP is the perfect launch- ing place for innovation and, ultimately, jobs. “The intent of the park is for innovative ideas to grow and turn into products and services. From those products come companies, and from companies come jobs,” he says. “What you’ll then start to see is a focus on Winston-Salem as a knowledge-based community centered around the research park and its institutes. My goal is to put PTRP on the world map. This is a jewel, and we have to polish that jewel and show it to the rest of the world.” Mission to Care, Mission to Cure McConnell says the goal of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s research focus is simple: to translate advancements into new products, new procedures, or new diagnostic approaches that will ultimately improve patient care.
