The visionaries who have been working on this project should be commended. —PTRP President Eric Tomlinson Built to Last Breaking down the state-of-the-art Wake Forest Biotech Place: ■ Glass blocks installed in the building facade: 65,869 ■ PediAtric SPeciAltieS: Celebrating 25 years ■ Pounds of sheet metal installed in the new facility: 473,000 ■ Number of chairs and stools: 1,381 ■ Square feet of painted surfaces: 2,202,048 ■ Interior, exterior, and street lights installed: 9,141 ■ Miles of plumbing and mechanical piping: 73 of service this year, Brenner Children’s Hospital includes the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in the state. With more than 140 pediatricians specializing in over 30 areas of pediatric medicine, Brenner Children’s provides care for newborn through teen patients. ■ regenerAtive Medicine: The Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) engineers replacement tissues and organs and develops healing cell therapies. This research team, led by Anthony Atala, M.D., is the first to successfully produce replacement organs in the lab that were implanted in patients, receiving international acclaim and a place on Time magazine’s list of the world’s ten most important medical breakthroughs. ■ cAncer: As one of only 41 centers in the country designated as comprehensive by the National Cancer Institute, the Comprehensive Cancer Center is recognized as a national leader in treatment, research, and education. With a focus on biomedical research, the center is identifying new treatments for breast cancer, prostate cancer, and brain tumors. When completed in 2014, the center will house inpatient and outpatient services in one location, making it one of the most advanced cancer treatment facilities in the country. ■ nePhrology: In a recent breakthrough, Barry Freedman, M.D., led a team of researchers that found much of the risk of kidney failure in African Americans can be attributed to an inheritance of an abnormal gene. Plans include developing genetic screening and preventive measures. ■ neuroScienceS: Specializing in care for patients with neurological illness, injury, and disorders, the Primary Stroke Center places efforts on improving the hospital-tohome transition.
