Driving Innovation Spotlight on John D. McConnell, M.D., CEO of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center John D. McConnell joined Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in late 2008, becoming the center’s first chief executive officer. Guided by a three-part philosophy of “balanced excellence” — providing top patient care, evolving and applying research knowledge, and training the next generation of medical leaders — McConnell advanced the successful merger of North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Wake Forest University Health Sciences in the first two years of his tenure. His leadership is springboarding the fully integrated academic medical center and health-care system into top rankings and impressive growth. Define “balanced excellence.” It’s important for an academic medical center to balance all three aspects of our single mission to improve health. We’re not a freestanding research institute, which means that if we just do research and it dies in the scientific literature and is never translated to actual improvements in patient care, then we haven’t achieved our goal. In education, if we don’t have a robust worldclass educational program to train the next generation of leaders — not just doctors, but leaders — in medicine, then the cycle cannot perpetuate itself in terms of excellence. But things still center around the patient. So if there’s a tiebreaker in the concept of balance of excellence, it’s all about the patient. How does your location in Winston-Salem benefit WFBMC? We find that if we can get new candidates here for a first visit, we have a very high probability of being successful in recruiting them. The combination of the university and the Medical Center creates a very unique culture and tradition of collegiality, and a lot of people come here because they want to collaborate with our world-class faculty. But equally important are the amenities that Winston-Salem has to offer, especially in the arts. We’re competing for faculty with Harvard, [University of California at] Berkeley, UCLA, and Stanford, and it’s really very important that the local community has a lot going on. It’s unusual for a town of this size to have so much. The University of North If we can get new candidates here for a first visit, we have a very high probability of being successful in recruiting them. Carolina School of the Arts, the opera company, the symphony, theater, art galleries, and more really make this a very attractive community to live in. And frankly, being two hours from the mountains and four hours from the beach doesn’t hurt either. Wake Forest Baptist has more than $3 billion in direct and indirect economic impact in the state each year. What about its global reach? We have global health programs in Africa, Shanghai, Beijing, and South Korea, as well as in other countries across many continents. In addition, some of our key discoveries have literally improved health around the world. The classic example is our invention of the wound V.A.C. [Vacuum-Assisted Closure], which is a wound-healing device that has saved countless lives and limbs. Through the great work happening here in Winston-Salem, we are very proud of the tremendous impact we’ve had around the globe.
