R PHOTOS COURTESY OF REYNOLDA HOUSE AND VILLAGE The expansive reception hall was the center of family life at Reynolda. eynolda House, Gardens, and Village, a cultural and recreational haven, lies just north of downtown Winston-Salem. The estate is the glowing vision of three generations of women who are all associated with the city’s founding patriarch, tobacco magnate Richard Joshua Reynolds. That vision starts with Reynolda House, the 64-room bungalow completed in 1917 and restored with original furnishings. One of the nation’s great collections of American art is on view throughout the home. The collection spans three centuries and includes memorable pieces by Charles Willson Peale, Frederic Church, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Besides touring the home of the estate, you can also visit the many shops and restaurants in Reynolda Village, once a working farm. Or simply relax in the adjacent Reynolda Gardens that have been carefully tended for generations. Whatever your pleasure, your experiences link directly to Katharine Smith Reynolds, who meticulously planned the estate with her husband nearly a century ago; her daughter Mary Reynolds Babcock, who purchased the estate from her siblings and preserved it; and Katharine’s granddaughter Barbara Babcock Millhouse, who in 1967 converted the historic house into a premier gathering place for American art and culture. “There are other historic sites, other art museums, but Reynolda offers something different,” says Executive Director Allison Perkins. “Experiencing a Thomas Cole painting in the reception hall where R.J. Reynolds’s daughters were married is something you can’t do anywhere else.” An example of the American Country Place Era, the 1,067-acre estate featured formal gardens, dairy barns, a cattle shed, a school, a post office, and all the services needed to run a working farm. The house, gardens, greenhouse, and 28 of the original buildings still stand, thoughtfully repurposed for modern-day dining, shopping, education, and recreation. “Reynolda is a story of vision and inspiration,” Perkins says. “When you understand the legacy of Katharine and R.J., you’ve understood an important piece of Southern history.” Reynolda House Museum of American Art Reynolda Village Shops & Restaurants Reynolda Gardens of Wake Forest University 2250 Reynolda Road Winston-Salem, NC reynolda.org Power Couple Discover the full story of Reynolda and its founders within the pages of KATHARINE AND R.J. REYNOLDS: PARTNERS OF FORTUNE IN THE MAKING OF THE NEW SOUTH by Michele Gillespie, a Wake Forest University history professor. Separately they were formidable, but together they were unstoppable. R.J. built R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company to become an industry leader behind such popular brands as Prince Albert pipe tobacco and Camel cigarettes. His marriage to Katharine Smith, nearly 30 years his junior, marked the beginning of a unique partnership that extended well beyond the family. As a couple, they provided leadership to a series of progressive reform movements and business innovations. And under Katharine’s direction, they built the Reynolda estate. usairwaysmag.com october 2012 77 http://www.reynolda.org http://www.usairwaysmag.com
