A neighborhood called Trade Street, between Fifth and Seventh Streets, will officially expand this fall, thanks to the support of the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership. The new area will be between Fifth Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and between Cherry and Main Streets, keeping Trade as “the spine.” Geography aside, Trade Street is proof that when beauty and art are planted, they will flourish. And Trade Street has a long history as a cultural hub, dating as far back as the late 1800s when it was called Old Town Road. Tobacco farmers would come to sell their harvest and stay for days, gathering in the evenings to make music and make merry. In fact, the music that began on Old Town Road was significant in the development of the “Old Time String Band” music of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge region.
