A third grant boosts individual regional artists with money to record a CD, for example, or to pro duce a documentary. Perhaps most important are the 20 ArtsinEducation grants funded in part with an $80,000 gift from Wells Fargo. “What will define cities of the future is how they connect,” Rhodes says. “There’s a transformation going on.” Citing the shift from the city’s manufacturingbased economy to one driven by scientific research, medicine, arts, history, and culture, Rhodes notes, “The chal lenge is how we get those compartments — arts and innovation — to work together for a new town, as it’s developing.” For him, arts education is key to achieving that goal. No one would agree more than Lynn Foltz, arts education program manager for WinstonSalem/Forsyth County Schools. “The grants provide arts teachers with specialized experiences for students,” she says, pointing to the WinstonSalem Symphony’s sessions to engage elementary school students in ensem ble performances, or the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art’s Intersections program that pairs exhibiting artists with art teachers (numbering 250 in the school system). The combined support of the Arts Council, Wells Fargo, the school board, and the superinten dent shows “they understand the value that arts contribute to the whole person,” she says.
