# Celebrate Winston-Salem, N.C. | WSSU Student Affairs. Trae Cotton, vice-chancellor of Student Affairs agrees, citing the necessity for students “to tie what’s going on in class with what’s going on outside of class. What we’re trying to do is supply programs that support the academic mission of the institution.” Programs include career development services to help students explore internships. And a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund develops leadership skills. But what excites Cotton most is the new Living and Learning Environment, where faculty members will begin presenting lectures in the residential halls, two of which are under construction. “Each floor will be its own pod,” Cotton explains. “It will have its own living room, where we can bring in faculty and have a lecture with 15 to 16 students and engage on a variety of topics with the hope that once the faculty’s gone, the conversation continues.” It’s a fairly utopian vision — one that induced envy in graduating seniors — and one that continues to inspire. Vice chancellor for Advancement Michelle Cook says the new curriculum is generating excitement among potential donors and prospective students alike. As for the broader academic world? “What’s happening on our campus is catching eyes,” says Cook, the executive director of the WSSU Foundation. And no doubt, it will soon catch on like wildfire. Each student is also paired with a Professional Advisor — the first-responder who assists when a student needs assistance with any challenge. WSSU also reduces the stigma of seeking help, whether engaging a tutor, taking supplemental classes, or making a trip to the writing lab. “We don’t want you to think of it as going to the principal’s office,” says Stitts. “We want you to think of it as, ‘I might want to write poetry.’ It’s not just about deficiencies; it’s about enhancing.” The university’s complex advisory network further facilitates the department’s tagline, Winston-Salem State University “UCaLL, We answer.” As Stitts acknowledges, 601 South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive part of UCaLL’s success is Winston-Salem, NC due to the final element of 336.750.2000 wssu.edu its three-part approach — its close relationship with usairwaysmag.com 94 october 2012 http://www.wssu.edu http://www.wssu.edu http://www.usairwaysmag.com
