2. FOR AN ESCAPE Below, from left: horseback riding at travaasa Hana and Pools of oheo Park, where you can hike above the clouds and explore tropical forests and waterfalls. Where to Stay What to Do For many of us, the ideal getaway is an escape from the hustle of everyday life. We look for a place that allows us to unplug and unwind. Enter travaasa Hana, an experiential, allinclusive hotel with a catalog of programming centered around five pillars: Adventure, Culture, Culinary, Wellness, and Fitness & Spa. The rooms are minimally appointed — no TVs, clocks, or Internet — but offer beautiful decks and private hot tubs overlooking the water. Even more appealing is the hotel’s proximity to Haleakala National Last year, Mokulele Airlines began offering short flights to the tropical paradise of Hana. But if you’re looking for a more leisurely trip to explore the island, you might prefer to drive. The historic Hana Highway, known for its harrowing twists and turns (620 curves and 59 bridges) and stunning scenery, weaves along the edge of sugarcane fields lining the slopes of Haleakala. Stop along the 52-mile road to take in the awesome views. Other pit stops are well worth making. Be sure to test the waters with a dip in the beautiful Pools of oheo, a collection of small, tranquil basins fed by streams starting two miles inland. Once you reach Haleakala National Park, hike up for a view from the highest point in Maui (10,023 feet above sea level). During your stay at Travaasa, pack some food and head to Waianapanapa State Park, where you can picnic alongside Hana Bay (grills provided). Where to Eat The restaurant at Travaasa Hana, where the chef emphasizes local ingredients and fresh catches, is a can’t-miss. If you want to explore a bit, head to Haliimaile General Store, where award-winning chef Beverly Gannon, the founder of regional Hawaiian cuisine, brings nature to the restaurant in a farm-to-table experience. For one of the mustsee views on the island, check out the casual Mala ocean tavern, overlooking the water and perfect for sunset sipping. Aloha Mixed Plate, also on the water, offers up traditional plantation fare. For lunch, this is one of your best bets. 58 october 2013 usairwaysmag.com
