COLOR Cause for a US Airways employees across the nation are rallying together and sporting a splash of color in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. By Tara Titcombe T his month, there’s a new color on full display across the sky: pink. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, US Airways and its 32,000 employees are joining the ﬁght against breast cancer. Employee Engagement Last October, US Airways introduced its BE PINK campaign as a way for employees to show support for those diagnosed with breast cancer and to raise money for cancer research. Many of the airline’s employees were instrumental in creating the successful, colorful campaign. 62 OCTOBER 2013 usairwaysmag.com “We’ve been able to answer our employees’ call, and we’ve also been able to raise awareness and money for a good cause,” says Elise Eberwein, executive vice president of people, communications, and public affairs. Thanks to employee feedback, US Airways began a partnership with the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks. The airline sponsored walks in its hub cities of Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington, DC. Employees in other cities across the nation also participated in walks, and their fund-raising efforts were matched by the company. In all, $72,000 was raised for breast cancer research through the Making Strides walks. Employees also showed support by going pink. Specially designed pink uniform items were available to all employees to wear throughout the month. Part of the proceeds from those uniform sales — totaling $33,000 — was donated to the American Cancer Society as well.
