to mention instant access to some of the city’s best
Vietnamese, Indian, and Ethiopian fare. Other
West Philly ’hoods like Powelton Village and
Spruce Hill are equally diverse and boast that
distinctively bohemian flair.
Though it’s easily reachable by public transit, this
area is also one of the most
cycle-centric in Philly, with
spacious street lanes, lock-up
racks, a soon-to-be citywide
bike-share program, and rideup food trucks aplenty.
Head back toward Center
City and you’ll land in
Fairmount, Philly’s cultural
gateway right next to the
museums on the Benjamin
Franklin Parkway. It’s home
to art galleries, Victorian
architecture, and even a
hauntingly beautiful historic
penitentiary you can tour (if
you dare). Then cut northeast
through Callowhill and Northern Liberties to take
in a hip mix of edgy galleries, performance spaces,
and venues. In these neighborhoods, heritage
shares space with innovation. Artists, inspired by
their surroundings, thrive, and in turn energize
their communities.
The city that’s loved by many and famous for
plenty is ready to be known
for so much more. Explore
the artistic communities and
galleries that add color to the
streets. Wherever you find
yourself in the city, take
advantage of tax-free clothes
shopping, BYOB restaurants
(you “bring your own bottle”
while the chef does the rest),
and homages to American
history. Or in one Philly expert’s simple words of advice:
“Get to know the different
personalities of each neighborhood,” Levitz says.
There’s one aspect of the
Philly neighborhood experience that’s so invaluable that
it can’t rightly be quantified.
We’re talking about the people, who are just as
proud, outspoken, and colorful as the city they
call home.
