I'm a big fan of the Great Indoors. So as I drove my decidedly un-rugged sedan through increasingly un-populated Stokes County, North Carolina, all I could think was, "What have I gotten myself into this time?" My boyfriend, Peter, was along for the ride, and seemed to find the thought of me hiking Hanging Rock - the much-lauded state park and the county's claim to fame - more than a little amusing. His quiet smile grew to a full-fledged grin as we arrived at our destination: Singletree Gun & Plough. I climbed out of the car and took a deep breath, taking in my surroundings. To my right was a two- usairwaysmag.com story wooden lodge encircled by an inviting porch, complete with rocking chairs, flowering planters, lanterns, and even barn cats. The sprawling property was lush and green, and seemed to be the only clearing within miles and miles of thick, unspoiled forest.
