C harlotte, North Carolina, welcomes the Democratic National Convention this month. Why did the DNC choose the Queen City? Simple. ball and where more NASCAR races take the track than any other U.S. city. Charlotte has become a destination in its own right, and now it’s ready for its close-up. The largest non-sports media event in the world, the DNC is much more It’s a pro-business Southern boom town. A major U.S. financial center that’s home to one-of-a-kind attractions from the Levine Center for the Arts to the U.S. National Whitewater Center. It’s where the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Bobcats play than politics. It’s an entertainment event that attracts more than 35,000 delegates, visitors, and members of the media. And the Queen City is ready to welcome the crowds. First Lady Michelle Obama hails Charlotte as “a city marked by its Southern charm, warm hospitality, and an ‘up by the bootstraps’ mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South.” In fact, Charlotte’s population has grown by one-third since 2000 (to about 750,000).
