Charlotte, N.C. CHARLOTTE # STORIES Touching History Step inside a one-room tenant farmer’s house or sit down at a lunch counter and hear personal accounts of sit-in leaders from the civil rights movement. These hands-on activities are just a sampling of the more than 1,000 artifacts, images, video clips, and more at the Levine Museum of the New South, home to the nation’s most comprehensive interpretation of Post-Civil War Southern history. The museum’s centerpiece is the awardwinning exhibition From Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers, featuring Charlotte and 13 surrounding counties. The exhibition illustrates the economic, political, and cultural changes in the South since the Civil War. For more info, go to museumofthenewsouth.org. From a rich history to a vibrant arts scene, green spaces to innovative places, Charlotte is the quintessential New American city. Sleek and Green Yes, Charlotte is one of the nation’s largest cities with an impressive cityscape. But it’s also an environmentally aware place with lots of green spaces. After tucking into farm-to-table fare at 7th Street Market, head to the Mecklenburg County Greenway, a network of 37 miles of developed trails and 150 miles of undeveloped greenways where you can walk, run, and bike right next to a gleaming skyline. Just south of Uptown, Freedom Park adjoins the historic Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods. Expect everything from basketball and volleyball courts to a bandshell and 7-acre lake. The park connects with the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, part of the Carolina Thread Trail project. This trail network will ultimately reach 15 counties and more than 2.3 million people. Along the urban section of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, look out for bronze statues, such as that of Captain James Jack, famed for his ride to Philadelphia carrying the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775. Part of the Trail of History, these monuments provide a way to learn about the county’s past, while experiencing the great outdoors. Charlotte B-cycle is made possible by BlueCross and BlueShield of North Carolina. With 200 bikes and 20 stations, it’s the state’s first bike-sharing program. 66 SEPTEMBER 2012 usairwaysmag.com http://www.museumofthenewsouth.org http://www.usairwaysmag.com
