state’s largest city, Duke Energy has taken a lead in renewable and clean energy initiatives, investing $1 billion in new smart grid technology, among other wind, solar, hydro, and biopower projects. All told, more than 1,000 companies participate in the renewable energy supply chain, employing more than 12,500 North Carolinians. Of course, manufacturing is still the backbone of many communities, with more than 430,000 people relying on manufacturing jobs, which have become high-tech and highly skilled. Thankfully, a network of worldclass community colleges enables these workers to learn new skills and adapt to the information age. In fact, North Carolina’s solid workforce has always been the No. 1 reason that companies choose to locate here, as North Carolinians are 36 percent more productive than the average U.S. worker. Perhaps it’s because they’re simply happier than the average worker. Easy access to the mountains and beaches, combined with the low cost of living and year-round moderate temps create a highly desirable quality of life — a competitive advantage for companies that enjoy the low cost of doing business and the ease of recruiting executives who find they like calling North Carolina home.
