Patients must travel to different specialists, navigate care options, and cope with physical and emotional issues. That’s why Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) formed Levine Cancer Institute — to improve cancer programs within its network and provide patients with a seamless, highquality care experience where they live. The new Charlotte facility — set to open in October — will serve as the administrative and research headquarters for the entire CHS network of cancer-treatment resources across the Southeast. With six floors and more than 171,000 square feet of space, the center will include an extensive clinical trials center with a special Phase I therapeutic unit designed to evaluate new treatments more quickly, and multidisciplinary clinics for complex and rare cancers. In addition, the center will feature cutting-edge teleconferencing technology that will allow physicians to collaborate long-distance, breaking down geographic barriers and improvseptember 2012 ing care across CHS. “The concept of Levine Cancer Institute is unique,” explains the Institute’s President, Derek Raghavan, MD, PhD (shown). “We’re developing a sophisticated academic and clinical cancer institute without walls, spanning CHS and providing state-of-the-art treatment and research programs close to where patients live.” The Institute’s progressive care also includes myriad resources such as genetic, nutritional, and emotional counseling, wellness programs, and support groups. Patient navigators help patients and their families review the many treatment options and make informed choices. Most of all, the Institute focuses on survivorship and supporting patients through every stage of treatment.
