Don’t miss: ■ the state Fair of texas, which always coincides with the game at the Cotton bowl. both are located in the Fair park area of downtown dallas. ■ the prime people-watching before and after the game at what’s long been known as the world’s largest outdoor Cocktail party. ■ a guided tour (not offered on game day) of yale’s new haven, Connecticut, campus. the architecture — much of it gothic and georgian — is spectacular. Factoid: ■ the river forms part of the states’ border that has in the past caused conflict, including 1931’s red river bridge war. ■ the game is played in Florida, but not gainesville, so technically it’s one of the few remaining “neutral-site” rivalries. ■ the annual grudge match between these two icons of higher education is known simply as the game. the first was in 1875. October 12, Dallas November 2, Jacksonville November 23, at Yale st./michigan ★ alabama/auburn ★ ohioBig Ten Pride For State Pride For Bay Area Pride For Cal/stanForD Why: ■ geography (less than 50 miles apart) and history (since 1892) make this one fierce rivalry. ■ See the above entry for the Georgia/Florida game. That about sums it up. ■ another annual clash that has come to be called the game — in two states in particular. Don’t miss: ■ during the week leading up to the game: stanford’s laser-light show and the Gaieties, a theatrical production that celebrates and pokes fun at the rivalry. ■ toomer’s Corner in auburn, where two iconic oak trees had to be cut down this year after being poisoned by a Crimson tide fan after the 2010 game. ■ the blood battle: student-led blood drives at each school in the weeks leading up to the game to see which campus can generate the most donations. Factoid: ■ in 1982, some stanford band members ran onto the field to celebrate — during a kickoff return. Cal won the disputed game. November 23, at Stanford ■ the matchup is called the iron bowl. For many years it took place in birmingham, which has historic ties to the steel industry. November 30, at Auburn ■ however things turn out, michigan fans can always point to the 1902 (no-)contest: an 86-0 dismantling of the buckeyes.
