US Airways - September 2014 - (Page 6)

Perspective embark Thank You for Flying with US Celebrating 25 Years of the Miami Hub ★ Twenty-five years ago American Airlines made the bold decision to turn its Miami operations into a major connecting hub and premier international gateway. The airline's leaders at the time had the foresight to purchase Eastern Airlines' Latin America route network and use it as a foundation for a vastly expanded presence at Miami International Airport. This foundation, along with Miami's strategic location, the strength of the community, and its historical ties to the Americas, helped make American's new hub operation an outstanding success. American quickly catapulted to the top U.S. airline serving Latin America, with more flights from the U.S. to more destinations than any other carrier. Today, American connects Miami to 123 destinations around the world - more than 100 of them not served by any other domestic carrier at the airport - with a robust schedule of 339 flights a day. The opening of the Miami hub is one of the most extraordinary success stories in the history of commercial aviation. Before 1989 our presence in Miami was quite modest, with just 19 flights per day. Most people forget that although American has been in business since 1926, it didn't start serving the city until 1979. We thank the leaders at American and Miami-Dade County for their vision, their passion, and the ability to recognize the economic potential of the Miami hub. Today, Miami has secured its rightful title as capital of the Americas. It routes more travelers and cargo to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other airport in the country. And, the 6 SEPTEMBER 2014 usairwaysmag.com Miami hub pumps billions annually into the South Florida economy. If you haven't seen it yet, our state-of-the-art North Terminal at MIA features everything from bright and airy concourses, spacious new gates, and bigger concession areas to an automated peoplemover system and one mile of moving sidewalks. As our Miami facilities, network, and operation have grown, so too has our team - from fewer than 300 employees 25 years ago to more than 11,000 today, making our company one of the largest private employers in South Florida. Last year alone American added 270 home-based reservations agents, 455 pilots, and 174 flight attendants based in Miami. I want to thank all of our Miami-based employees, as well as the local community and our customers, for helping to make South Florida a better and more rewarding place for everyone. As we celebrate the Miami hub's 25th anniversary, the new American is proud to renew our commitment to this vibrant community, and we look forward to starting service to our two newest destinations, Cap-Haitien, Haiti and Campinas, Brazil, from Miami this fall. On behalf of the entire American family of 100,000 employees, thank you for flying with us today. We look forward to seeing you on a flight with us again soon.
