Lancaster County Official Map & Overnight Getaway Guide 2009 - (Page 7) Wake up in Downtown Lancaster. Yes, we actually have a downtown and it’s thriving. While travelers always visit our charming towns and villages for a sampling of the hands-on activities, historic sites, boutique shops, homegrown food, Amish heritage, and good deals for which we’re famous, folks are also discovering our thriving city life in Downtown Lancaster. Find a city full of funky art galleries, great dining, cool events, specialty stores, and live music – nearly 300 places in all to eat, shop, and explore. Much of the city’s charm stems from its rich history. This historic-yet-urban appeal is apparent the moment you step inside places like Central Market and Fulton Theatre, the country’s oldest continuously operating farmers market and performing arts theater, respectively. Of course, our downtown offers newer traditions as well, ranging from Clipper Magazine Stadium and its Lancaster Barnstormers baseball team, to special events like Celebrate Lancaster every Fourth of July, to the more than 30 new shops and restaurants that have opened in the city just during the past year. Downtown Lancaster also sports a hip new look with its monthly “First Fridays” featuring extended hours at our galleries, eateries, and shops. In addition, we’ve got interactive fun at the new Lancaster Science Factory and handcrafted beauty inside the freshly expanded Lancaster Quilt & Textile Museum. In fact, the city lies at the center of Lancaster County’s creative side. Its seven square miles are collectively packed with art museums and galleries, antiques stores, theatrical productions, and music venues. It recently even added accommodations dedicated to the creative – the Lancaster Arts Hotel. There are numerous other great lodging options in the city, too, and we’ll be adding to them this spring with the Marriott Lancaster at Penn Square, connected to the new Lancaster County Convention Center. Situated in the heart of Downtown Lancaster and seamlessly incorporating the façade of the historic Watt & Shand department store, the 300-room hotel and adjoining convention center will provide a combined 90,000 square feet of meeting space and the latest technology for event attendees, and the close proximity of all the city’s offerings for the free time of those participants, their families, and the hotel’s leisure guests. So when you come to Lancaster County, be sure to visit Downtown Lancaster as part of your travels. We think you’ll like the way our city effortlessly combines a small-town feel with a rich urban experience. W h e n y o u c o m e o v e r, s t a y o v e r !
