The dam on the Wallenpaupack Creek in northeastern
Pennsylvania was completed in 1926 to form Lake
Wallenpaupack, Pike and Wayne counties. The Pennsylvania
Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) then closed the lake to
boating and fishing for two years. Now, 90 years later, and
through good fisheries management, it has become a major
destination for anglers who target a variety of species including
a healthy population of Smallmouth Bass and Largemouth
Bass. Lake Wallenpaupack is Pennsylvania's third largest lake.
The earliest kept records from 1932 reveal that a variety
of warm water species, including Largemouth Bass, were
introduced to the lake every year until 1955. Those same
records indicate only Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth
Bass and catfish were stocked in 1956. No further stockings of
Largemouth Bass or Smallmouth Bass have taken place at the
lake since that time. However, forage species, like Alewives,
shiners and crayfish, and ideal habitat have been kind to bass
reproduction and growth. Even with a lot of bass available,
finding and catching them in 5,700 acres of water surface can
be a challenge unless you know what to throw when you go.

After the spawn, bass have moved off the shallow
water redds and into deeper water. From one end of Lake
Wallenpaupack, southwest near the main river entrance, to
the northeast where the dam and PFBC public launch ramp
are located, there are many coves, shallow shorelines and
deep, close-to-shore drop-offs. In July, bass are found near
drop-offs, around the ends of longer docks and weed lines
in 12- to 15-feet of water. Several hydrographic structure
maps exist and are available at local bait and tackle shops and
marinas. These maps can save you time and help you pinpoint
fish-holding areas.
Topwater lures are an early summer favorite.
For more strikes, replace the front hook
with a red hook and use a marker
to put more red on the bait.
If the lure doesn't have
a flashy tail, add one.
Hydrographic structure
maps are available at
local bait and tackle
shops and marinas.
These maps help anglers
find shallows, drop-offs and
other lake characteristics.
