perch were at varied depths, and the band concept
did not apply. Perch were scattered at all depths, often
mixed with other panfish and Freshwater Drums.
Often terminal rigs can be tracked with the sonar,
especially with a wide angle cone transducer. Even with
the narrow cone that I prefer, any rig in the back of the
boat can be seen on the sonar screen. This is by far the
most efficient, easiest means of precise depth control.
Watching the screen, an angler can move a baited rig
right to the perch.
Counting down, or up, the line from the rod tip is
equally accurate but much slower. First, the amount
of line picked up with each turn of the reel must be
measured. Then, back-crank the bait rig into the
desired depth or drop the sinker to the bottom and
count up.
For a simpler approach, the bait rig can be cast to
the estimated location of the perch. Then, close the
bail, and let it sink.
While drifting or trolling, the angle of the fishing
line really affects depth control. If the angle is too
great, you are moving too fast. Slow down and use a
heavier sinker.
Perch use all of the water column. You can get close to
perch by properly interpreting and adjusting your sonar.
