Releasing a Redbreast Sunfish into a hometown creek. Mid-size streams occasionally produce Smallmouth Bass from deeper runs and pools. crayfish and hellgrammites. I know that brass and gold spinners; gold and silver minnow plugs; yellow, orange and green crankbaits; grey, brown and white minnow fly patterns; and orange and olive crayfish flies will catch fish. Bass and panfish only get particular when the creek becomes stained by stormwater. Then, one plug or streamer fly color has better visibility than others. Last year, I enjoyed catching a number of colorful and varied hybrid sunfish. The body patterns of these small fish were vibrant and seemingly unique. In shape, these fish had the broad-bodied contours of a Green Sunfish but the facial and fin patterns were a blaze of color. The aqua blue facial lines of Redbreast Sunfish were often visible and so were yellow and white fin edges, but I also saw flame orange gill covers and dark orange and gold eyes.
