It is my sincere hope that every boy, girl, man and woman
escape to a place where currents and pools hold more than
mere water. Mine is the Allegheny River.
Pennsylvania's Allegheny River gives life to its many wild
residents, from frog to fawn and bug to bear. The Allegheny
River, like an oasis, quenches the thirst of Pennsylvania's
farmlands. For generations, the Allegheny River's industrial
fluids fueled mills and factories.
It was the summer when I was 9 years old that I opened this
gift. Just shy of fourth grade, I worked at learning to cast a lure
into a run quieter than a shadow. A decade of honing the art of
fishing this big river, and the opportunity for the best fishing
trip of my life surfaced. Dad proposed a week-long journey
from Kinzua Dam, Warren County, to East Brady, Clarion
County. The father-son journey encompassed approximately
150 river miles across seven days. We stopped at various towns
for supplies and hopped from island to island for adequate
campsites. Allow me to briefly share a daily breakdown of
tales, techniques and tactics for the Allegheny River.
Day 1
The adventure began within sight of the magnificent
Kinzua Dam. The river spanned just beyond the length of
a solid cast. Not at all the size I grew up with nearly a week's
drift downriver. From the Kinzua Dam through Warren,
Warren County, I utilized versatile lures able to equally fool
Smallmouth Bass and trout. Adaptable arsenal included
medium-sized, in-line spinners or small jigs with spinning gear.
If fly fishing, streamers and terrestrials would be productive.
Along with a handful of nice Rainbow Trout, I landed a
monster 191/2-inch Brown Trout in a pool above Warren.
