The Financial Women’s Association The FWA goes for goals Who We Are he Financial Women’s Association (FWA) is the leading professional association for women in finance. The organization serves a growing national and international membership through educational programs, leadership development and networking opportunities – and works to develop future generations of business leaders through nationally acclaimed scholarship, mentoring and training programs. The FWA, a non-profit organization, was established in 1956 by a group of Wall Street women. While the original membership of eight has grown to more than 1,100 women and men today, the goals of the FWA remain essentially the same: • To advance professionalism in finance and in the financial services industry with special emphasis on the role and development of women. • To provide a public forum for examination of important contemporary issues in business, finance, governmental policy and civic affairs. • To attain greater recognition for women’s achievements in business. • To encourage women to seek career opportunities in finance and business. T scholarship program to assist participants in the FWA’s High School Mentoring Program at Murry Bergtraum High School to enter and continue higher education programs. The High School Mentoring Program has been providing mentors for students at this NYC public school for almost 20 years. Financial Backpack is a series of workshops taught by FWA members that teach high school students practical financial skills. FWA’s Wall Street Exchange internship program is designed to enhance the summer experience of college students working in NYC financial jobs between their junior and senior years. In the mentoring program at CUNY’s Baruch College, FWA members provide one-on-one relationships, networking opportunities, group activities. The FWA presents over 100 events each year to inform, educate and advance its members, their careers and the business community. Members are also encouraged to cultivate leadership skills and learn more about the organization by becoming actively involved in the FWA’s 25 permanent committees. The FWA is committed to highlighting the achievements of distinguished women in the public and private sectors, as well as to offering its members interactive exchanges with these leaders through speakers series, professional development and networking opportunities. These include FWA Women of the Year Awards given at the Annual Dinner, Distinguished Speaker Series, leadership programs, and educational offerings on emerging issues, entrepreneurship, non-profit sector, and career development. FWA’s Annual International Conference enables members to learn in a specific country about global business and government issues from the people shaping those issues, gaining behind the headlines access to information and a hands-on feel for the business climate. Other FWA programs offer a chance to expand the non-business aspects of the professional’s life. FWA Educational Fund activities encourage young women to seek career opportunities in business and finance. Among these are scholarships for graduate study in business and an undergraduate Activities The FWA’s membership includes experienced financial executives who hold positions of authority, are well-educated and financially successful, and influence large business, economic and political trends. Employers of FWA members include major banks, investment banks, accounting and consulting firms, governmental agencies on the federal state and local levels, and corporations spanning a multitude of product and service categories. Members hold senior positions of power and influence within their companies: 28% are chairmen, CEO, president, owner or partner; 32% are executive vice president, senior vice president, vice president or managing director; 27% are director or manager, or in other executive management positions. Members are well-educated and financially successful: 74% hold a post-graduate degree: 40% have obtained an MBA; nearly one third earn $200,000 or more; 47% have a household net worth of $1 million or more. Members represent a seasoned well-established group of executives in finance: 27% have worked in the finance industry for more than 25 years; 79% have worked in the industry for more than 15 years: 27 % of members work for sizable corporations with more than 10,000 employees. FWA attracts a growing number of entrepreneurs: 14% of members are self-employed. One-third work in companies with fewer than 50 employees.
