He was too ill to come to the surgery. The receptionist told George he should come to the surgery. She thought she was a doctor and she wasn’t. George was too ill to come to the surgery and he knew it. George told her so. A home visit was arranged. George dusted the bookcase, set out the cups, put on his red tie and combed his hair. He sat in his favourite chair. Tick, tick, tick. Dr Armitage came. Impatient, tired, drawn. But he came. George had lots to tell. The ache here, the pain there, the programme on BBC 2 about the war, so inaccurate, his window box was doing well, his sister had cancelled again. Dr Armitage left. Impatient, tired, irritated. But he had come. Tick, tick, tick. Thursday. Pension day. George felt ill again today. It was worse than Tuesday. He bought cherry bakewells, the radio times, steak and kidney pudding. He put away his shopping, made his tea, sat in his favourite chair. Tick, tick, tick. Dr Armitage was coming. George dusted the bookcase, set out the cups, put on his blue tie and combed his hair. George sat in his favourite chair. Tick, tick, tick. Dr Armitage came. Impatient, tired, drawn. But he came. It was the weekend again. George knew because the couple next door didn’t wake early. Their bed banged on the wall late morning. It banged for 15 minutes. George thought his window box looked good. Tick, tick, tick. George felt ill. He must call the doctor. He ate steak and kidney pudding and cherry bakewells and watched BBC 2. George was very ill today. G Too ill to go to the surgery. He called Dr Armitage. Dr Armitage was coming. He wrote a letter of complaint about the receptionist who thought she was a doctor. Tick, tick, tick. George dusted the bookcase, set out the cups, put on his green tie and combed his hair. He sat in his favourite chair. Tick, tick, tick. Dr Armitage was late. Tick, tick, tick. But he came. Impatient, tired, silent. But he came. George told all. The window box was doing well, the steak and kidney pudding hadn’t been as good as last week. Dr Armitage didn’t drink his tea or eat his cherry bakewell. George decided to buy apple pies on Thursday. Dr Armitage would like apple pies, everyone liked apple pies. George liked apple pies. Thursday. Pension day. George felt ill today. He bought apple pies, the radio times, chicken and bacon pie. He was tired. He left his shopping on the floor. He called Dr Armitage. Tick, tick, tick George did not dust the bookcase, or set out the cups or put on his red tie or comb his hair. He sat in his favourite chair. Tick, tick, tick. His arm ached, his chest hurt, his chest hurt. Dr Armitage did not come. Tick, tick, tick. It was the weekend. The bed next door banged on the wall mid morning. The window box was dry, the apple pies were on the floor. George was in his favourite chair. Tick, tick, tick.
