Powder Coated Tough - Fall/Winter 2007 - (Page 13) From a small anodizing plant to a multimillion dollar company that offers a three-dimensional dye sublimation process licensed by more than 400 shops, Decoral Systems has found its niche in the powder coating industry. improvements in the dye sublimation process that led to much advancement in the technology, Baker reveals. “Starting from the primary manufacturing facility in Verona, Italy, the company has grown to include more than 400 Decoral licensees and authorized applicators in 60-plus countries—from Europe to Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, Africa and across North and South America,” he says. The Process The first part of the process includes preparation and coating of the substrate, which can be aluminum, steel, die casting, glass, ceramic, MDF and even certain plastics. Baker says the work piece receives a traditional pretreatment that is appropriate for proper adhesion and the final use environment. Proprietary powder is applied and cured using a conventional powder coating system. “The Decoral basecoat ensures adequate hardness of the final product and protects the substrate from light, weather, abrasion, corrosion and humidity,” Baker says.
