Powder Coated Tough - Spring 2008 - (Page 29) One of the largest new application potentials for powder is coil coating. Promoted a few years ago, the MSC Powder Cloud process looked promising, but failed to uniformly apply and cure at high speeds the available powders which would be cost competitive with existing low dry film thickness liquid coil coatings. A reportedly more advanced technology in terms of performance, cost, and flexibility has since been developed. It is known as the patented Powder CoilTM process utilizing a novel Powder JetTM applicator with a pilot line operating later this year to powder coat 42” web aluminum and steel coil at 300 to 500 fpm. Unfortunately, these spray dried powders still contained 2% to 5% residual solvent, which could not be adequately ES applied and cured. Conceived as a lower cost route for manufacturing powder coatings, the Vedoc Advanced Manufacturing Process (VAMP) supercritical CO2 high pressure process for facilitating dispersion of pigments/additives into the resin was highly publicized but never commercialized. This “revolutionary chemical process” also had the potential of producing low-temperature curing powders and allowing application of more reactive systems without the risk of pre-reaction during processing. Among the reported scaleup problems was the atomization step or spraying the resin solution to ultimately produce ES powders with the right particle size distribution for uni- Introducing ENCORE .
