Powder Coated Tough - Spring 2008 - (Page 35) with a gas-convection heating system, 40-ft long at 8 fpm, which equals 5 minutes of drying. The dry-off oven ductwork is configured with vertical slots that discharge air at a high velocity directly onto the wet parts. Coursin says that this has two benefits: the air sweeps the water droplets off of the parts and accelerates the heating and drying of the parts due to the high turbulence, which in turn allows operation of the dry off oven at lower operating temperatures. The powder booth is a Nordson cartridge-type powder reclaim booth with a 3-ft part opening and with extra reclaim modules and a spray-to-waste module. The booth normally uses 108 scfm of compressed air and has two automatic oscillators and two manual gun stations with Nordson manual guns for hard to reach areas on the parts. It uses a light curtain and an encoder that KMI mounted on the conveyor to sense conveyor speed in order to control the guns. The guns are controlled by a Nordson process control system, which minimizes excessive overspray. The environmentally controlled room was easy to include in the new facility as the building had an existing 53 x 48-ft room that was already air conditioned and humidity-controlled. Coursin says this room required very few changes to make it suitable for the powder painting operation. When asked why they chose Nordson, Lipa said, “They have highly trained, experienced sales and service reps with an average of 16 years experience, and a huge research and development lab for customer testing capability. For our powder coating application needs, both manual and automatic, Nordson was the clear choice for us. They packaged all of our special needs into a well engineered system, allowing Folding Guard to spend more time powder coating and less time maintaining that system.” The paint cure oven is a KMI floormounted multi-pass powder cure oven with a gas-convection heating system, 41-ft OD long x 23-ft OD wide x 12-ft 6-in OD high with 130-feet of conveyor at 8 fpm, which equals 16.2 minutes residence time in oven. Coursin explains that the first 2 minutes is a gasinfrared zone that heats the parts up to temperature and gels the powder paint. Then the parts enter the 14.2 minute gas-convection high-velocity zone to complete the cure cycle. The oven is equipped with speciallly designed high-volume low-velocity air seals that retain the hot air in the oven without dislodging powder paint from the parts. The use of the IR zone allowed KMI to reduce the overall footprint that the cure oven takes up on the factory floor, in addition to the quick gelling of the powder paint prior to final cure. The enclosed track overhead conveyor is a Unibilt conveyor that was designed to travel at 8 fpm nominal speed through the process equipment, with 600 ft of track, 60 ft of which is through the 304SS washers.
