Powder Coated Tough - Spring 2008 - (Page 40) CUSTOM COATERS CORNER instrumental in the origins and growth of the custom coater membership and the initiation of custom coater representation on the PCI Board—it was only natural and fitting that Carolinas Custom Clad became a member company of PCI as well in 1997. The younger Wright has served on various committees, including the custom coater steering committee, and has served on PCI’s board of directors since 2004. Collaboration Pays Off PCI membership certainly has had its advantages for this custom coater. Most recently, Carolinas Custom Clad was able to design a new square transfer line by collaborating with several other Industrial Solutions Creating Value with Industrial Solutions Our innovative and reliable products make us a trusted value added partner for industry. All three use similar systems and were able to offer valuable input. According to Chris, “[As a PCI Custom Coater member,] you attend meetings and you network with other custom coaters and you find out what they’re doing to address certain processes and capability needs, and that was how the square transfer line was born [at our facility].” Chris Wright’s business partner and operations manager Gary May utilized his 30 years of experience in the powder coating industry by taking the collaborative concept and adapting it to Carolinas Custom Clad’s facility and product mix. The unique line, according to Wright, fits in a footprint of 160' x 70', which allows them to process large product very effectively. “Instead of moving [product] around on carts or forklifts, the line utilizes a series of IBeam rails and load bar trolleys…[it] gives us an edge, not only from a standpoint of the part size…but the ability to put a lot of those larger products through a system,” he says. He notes many shops can finish one large part, but the new square transfer line allows his shop to run production of large product, “similar to a conveyorized line where you’re treating large parts like small parts, creating a density and volume. We just happen to have a customer mix that lends itself to that,” he says. Overall, the company utilizes a “mixed bag” of equipment, according to Wright, including guns from ITW Gema exclusively.
