Powder Coated Tough - Spring 2009 - (Page 16) EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES ing the spray pressures at each stage and temperature at the three cleaning stages. The three cleaning stages and final seal rinse stage bath solutions are maintained by the system activating chemical pumps as required to keep the solutions within our specified limits.” The rinse stages are monitored and controlled to keep the solutions as clean as possible with the least amount of run-off possible. This is accomplished through cascading each rinse stage back to the previous stage through a series of back flow and fresh water valves controlled by the CPQ3000. Stilwagon explains that the PowderTrak® part of Photo courtesy ECC Controls of Illinois Inc. the system is helping control the powder management on Cybex’s Excel booth to maintain and improve powder transfer efficiencies. “This is done by a series of continuous measurements of the powder being sprayed, reclaimed and new powder additions,” he says. “The system controls the transfer pumps to maintain a consistent ratio of virgin to reclaim powder. The data collected allows us to see any discrepancies and identify problems within the application equipment and operator processes.” Cybex is monitoring the paint conveyor line run time and line stops with the CPQ3000, data is collected and produced into a summary report. The report shows live activity as well as the previous shift summary. “We are able to review total run time, amount of stops and total stop time for each shift, as well as stop log data that shows each stop time and duration for a selected period of time,” Stilwagon says. Another part of the CPQ3000 system is film thickness data collection. With a wireless film thickness reader at the line unload, process readings are taken and stored in the database. Stilwagon says that at Cybex, this feature is used for monitoring the final coating quality, application operator performance, and ability to retrieve data at a later date if needed. “We have the ability with this system to track our production parts back through the paint line process for future reference,” he says. This is done by scanning the product’s serial number bar code at two different points on the line, and that number is stored with the run date and scan times. “We can retrieve the scanned product number from the data base and review all the line process data related,” he says. Other data that is monitored and collected with the CPQ3000 is the cure and dry oven temperatures and environmental room temperature and humidity. “Also several key functions from our RO/wastewater management system are monitored and logged such as current and historical flow rates for both the RO supply and waste discharge, RO water quality, and waste discharge pH,” he says. The CPQ3000 system incorporates tank sensors to effectively control chemical concentrations and water quality in the rinse stages.
