The Greenville A new addition for Artisphere 2008 is that organizers have turned the Signature Artist Performances into the Signature Artist Series. Murphy says three world-renowned performers in the area of dance will be showcased during the festival. “Not only will they do performances, but they will conduct master classes for students at the Governor’s School,” explains Murphy. Also new for this year’s festival is an Upstate artists’ exhibition at the Centre Stage theater in downtown Greenville. The exhibition runs from April 3 to May 23 and will showcase artists within a 35-mile radius of Greenville. Murphy says the exhibition is just one more opportunity for local artists to be involved. The artists featured at Artisphere are from the Upstate and around the country. Murphy says the size of the crowd grows each year as does the pool of artists hoping for a spot on Artist Row. This year the panel sifted through 425 applications sent in from artists located around the world and managed to narrow the pool to just 100 sculptors, photographers, painters and jewelry designers who will display their work on Greenville’s Main Street. Murphy says the final selection is varied and should satisfy all who attend the festival. “Folks can find things as inexpensively as $20 up to $2,000,” she says. “Whether you are an art lover or collector or someone who is just coming out and picking out a small item by surprise, there is something for everybody.” Last year, 75,000 people crowded Main Street for Artisphere, more than doubling the attendance of the event’s first year. This year, organizers are hoping for even bigger crowds. They’re publicizing the festival in Atlanta, Charlotte and across South Carolina, in an effort to promote tourism for the area. “We’re glad to play our part to put Greenville on the map as a cultural destination,” Murphy says. And maybe if Artisphere is as successful as the festival’s new executive director hopes, she’ll pull out those wine glasses and celebrate.
