And More Helpful “Green” Tips • According to Duke Energy’s Web site, www.duke-energy.com, your home’s heating and cooling system is responsible for about half of your home’s monthly energy bill. Clean or replace air conditioning filters monthly. Dirty filters make air conditioning units work harder and use more energy. • Rather than buying a new threepack of paper towels every other week, pick up a few three-packs of dish towels from Dollar General or Wal-Mart. By washing and reusing these towels, you can save in the neighborhood of $13 dollars every month. The same goes for cloth versus paper napkins. 7 Turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save you up to four gallons per minute.You’re not using it, and that’s 200 gallons each week for a family of four! At www. energydepot.com/duke%5Fct/, you can calculate your savings based on wattage and hours used per day. For example, a 60-watt incandescent bulb switched on about eight hours a day, costs about $12 each year – and that’s just one bulb! But that same bulb, in compact fluorescent form, costs only $2. The savings are clear – make the switch! • Most appliances draw a small electric current even when turned off. Some even draw the same current as when they’re turned on. To alleviate this, plug appliances near one another (your TV, DVD player and cable receiver, for example) into a single power strip. Then, before you go to work every day, unplug turn off the strip. It will save energy and help shave down your monthly energy bill. 8 Trade in disposable shopping bags for reusable ones.
