The impact of Upstate college football seems to remain constant, even in the face of national economic downturn and soaring consumer costs. In fact, success on the gridiron directly correlates to sales figures. A successful team draws in more fans, increases interest in collegiate apparel and merchandise and sets the stage for bigger money-making events, such as ESPN’s College Game Day. “The soaring gas prices and poor economic forecast haven’t affected our sales,” says Spearman. “To tell you the truth, our business suffers only when there’s a substantial losing streak.” With that said, the next time you’re at a college football game, root a little harder and yell a little louder knowing that not only are you having fun, but you’re also boosting the local economy.
