Greenville Magazine - August 2008 - (Page 23) Among these visitors have been Prime Ministers, presidents, speakers of the US and South Carolina Houses of Representatives, senators, secretaries of the US Departments of State, Health and Human Services and Education, city and county councilmen and women, mayors from the United States and abroad, governors, members of Parliament from around the world, and experts on social security, health, education, the environment, women in politics and other policy areas vital to our area and country. Visitors include Newt Gingrich, Senator John Glenn, Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell, Secretary of State Madeline Albright, Louis Sullivan, Ambassador David Wilkins, Prime Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Former Prime Minister of Canada Brian Mulroney, Tom Brokaw and Senator Hillary Clinton, among others. Many of these visitors spend time on campus during the day meeting with students, attending classes and dialoguing with faculty and staff before offering a community-wide public address in the evening. Students, faculty and community members are encouraged to engage these visitors in conversation about the pressing public policy issues of our time. In 2008-2009, the Institute will host numerous visitors and policy events on campus and around South Carolina. Among these will be Fellow-in-Residence Eibhlin Byrne, the newly elected Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ireland, a major conference on Religion and Politics in Europe, showcasing renowned scholar Eric Kaufmann, from Birkbeck University in the UK; the Wilkins Legislative Award Dinner in Columbia in January; in March, the Institute, in collaboration with Furman’s Department of Asian Studies, will host the Riley Institute’s fourth National Conference focused on China’s Foreign Policy, with a full slate of guests from around the world; and in collaboration with the Charleston School of Law, a regional conference on constitutional reform in Charleston during April.
