BROWNFIELD DEVELOPMENTS Brown fields turning varied shades of green By Jim Dunlap he golf course development boom of the 1990s has subsequently busted many owners who swallowed the “we need to build a course a day to meet demand” bait, but obviously, of the thousands of courses built during that decade, there have been some positive developments. One of the generally beneficial aspects of the new course zeal was the realization that while contaminated or environmentally distressed sites might be unfit for residential development or agricultural cultivation, many of them could, with proper treatment and some vision, become perfectly good – in some cases spectacular – golf courses. Three examples of those so-called “brownfield” develop- Harbor Shores, Three Crowns and Chambers Bay have different visions, but all have improved what they found T ments are the Harbor Shores Golf Course in Benton Harbor, Mich., where the Senior PGA Championship was played several weeks ago, the Three Crowns course in Casper, Wyo., built on an old Amoco (now BP) refinery site, and Chambers Bay on the shores of Puget Sound in Pierce County, Wash., the site of the 2010 U.S. Amateur which will also host the 2015 U.S. Open.
