While Knuth is obviously hoping to turn High Heat into
a lucrative fourth career, following graduation from the U.S.
Naval Academy and a rise to the rank of Captain in the Naval Reserves, the USGA stint and 10 years designing defense
intelligence systems at Northrop Grumman, he has not lost his
passion for handicapping systems. In addition to the Slope and
handicap systems he developed for the USGA, he
has developed the Knuth
Handicap Rating System
which is based not on the
actual scores that a player shoots in tournament
events, but rather on how
the player finishes in the
event.
"I care about credibility
and equity in handicaps,
which is why I developed
the original course and
slope rating system," Knuth
said. "I think this new sys-
tem is helping to add credibility to millions of golfers in competitions of all kinds. A number of clubs and several regional golf
associations have adopted it. People interested in finding out

cent for it."
While Knuth is in the equipment business, and is exclusively
focused on benefitting the amateur golfer with clubs that are
easier for them to hit, don't assume that means he favors different rules for amateurs and
pros. His USGA background
remains ingrained.
"I support the Rules of Golf,
so I would never support bifurcating the rules," he said. "That
also means that I would never
sell non-conforming equipment."
And, if Knuth and High
Heat can truly help amateur and
recreational golfers play better,
get that message out and do
it within the rules, that would
have to be a win-win for both
the industry and High Heat. n
