The award recognizes the extraordinary leadership efforts of one business that has used its position in the marketplace to organize consumers and businesses together to build a more socially just and ecologically sustainable economy. The handmade products are 100% recycled. There are no toxic chemicals used in the papermaking process, only basic bonding agents such as alum and rosin, along with water-soluble salt dyes for coloring. uMr. Ellie Pooh | www.mrelliepooh.com PFFC-ASAP 301 Innovative Packaging Solutions, Chicago, IL, receives a 2008 Golden Cylinder Award from the Gravure Assn. of America in the category of Flexible Packaging–Film. The Popchips package, printed by Mayor Packaging Enterprises (1968) Ltd., features in-register matte varnish to achieve the matte look with registered glossy areas. At the last station of a nine-unit gravure press, operators had to calculate the matte varnish to achieve the correct contrast of matte and glossy on the film surface. The last station on the press flips the material so the matte varnish is printed on the surface. Registration had to be carried out by eye, since the transparent coating is undetectable by the press.
