PFFC - May 2008 - (Page 26) NEWS CLIPS Plastic sheet scrap comes back to life in a sustainable alternative approach to recycling. Recycling Program Aimed at Customers JANESVILLE, WI | GOEX Corp., a manufacturer of printable custom plastic sheet, is combining two environmental concepts—sustainability and recycling—to keep product out of landfills and return salable product to customers. In the “zero landfill” policy, GOEX is able to pull back plastic sheet materials that have non-plastic components. For example, returned scrap from a card manufacturer may have been printed but also may have magnetic tape, overlamination film, signature panels, and more. GOEX says these materials now can be recycled back into a functional/printable plastic sheet customers can use again and again. GOEX president Josh Gray says, “It’s a process of educating the customer to elevate what he may have previously considered to be trash into a recycled plastic sheet that has value and is useful. The value to the customer becomes having the ability to market recycled product.” Sniffing Out Odors ROUND ROCK, TX | When the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs program featured a segment on how to contain or neutralize the stench of dirty diapers, the star of the show was Microanalytics, a sub. of MOCON. Host Mike Rowe explored Microanalytics’ AromaTrax GCMSOlfactometry Systems, which use analytical chemistry (combined with the human nose) to provide an accurate and efficient way to characterize and identify critical odors. Rowe visited a local daycare center to collect samples and took them to Microanalytics for analysis. Microanalytics founder Don Wright gave Rowe a tour of the labs and let him experience how the odor ID process works. “In this [diaper] example,” says Wright, “our goal is to help manufacturers optimize the film that is used to make garbage bags so that it forms a greater barrier to the specific odorants that are emitted by aged, dirty diapers.” MISSION VIEJO, CA | China Paper Holdings (CPH), a sourcing paper company and a sub. of Global Sourcing Solutions, says protectionist policies stifle innovation and competition to the global economy. CPH recently applauded the ruling from the US Intl. Trade Commission (ITC) to lift duties on coated free paper. The ITC found the US industry was neither materially injured nor threatened by imports of coated free sheet paper from Asia. The US imports nearly $300 billion of merchandise from China each year, with continued growth expected.
