Gentag focuses on the creation of wireless sensor technologies based on cell phones. “By combining cell phones with RFID skin patches, we feel that medical errors in hospitals worldwide can be reduced significantly in major cost benefits, says Gentag founder Dr. John Peeters. “Our unique, patented, noninvasive solution combines disposable skin patches with RFID tags and cell phones and will allow physicians and nurses to use their cell phones or wireless PDAs to update medical charts, time of patient visit, drug administration, and also be immediately warned about possible drug interactions prior to drug delivery.” Lawrence Sammeroff, chairman of Frank Sammeroff Ltd., says, “We expect large quantities of RFID skin patches to be sold to hospitals but also to organizations such as amusements parks, where [they] could be used for entrance control, payment services, and child ID and location.” The patches are thin, flexible, and washproof. They allow for writing on them by pen as well as writing data to the chip or to a remote website. EX P TION Two-Sided Tape Offered LAKE VILLA, IL | CH Hyde Co. announces the availability of Teflon (PTFE) tape with adhesive on both sides (thin to thick gauge). The PSA is up to 0.060 in. thick. The double-sided tape allows customers to fasten two substrates together easily and cost-effectively, the company reports. Rivets, bolts, and screws are not necessary. The characteristics are the same as those associated with Teflon: chemical resistance, nonporous barrier, extreme temperature resistance, and dielectric strength. 3M acrylic adhesive on both sides enables attachment to other substrates. Papers 30 | MAY 2008 Partnering to Further RFID PETAH TIKVA, ISRAEL | PowerId, a supplier of battery-assisted, passive (BAP) RFID technology, reports the conclusion of a strategic partnership with STMicroelectronics, Geneva, Switzerland, a supplier of RFID chips. Under the agreement, PowerID will work with STMicroelectronics to foster the further penetration of BAP technology into existing and new markets. The companies will explore, in a future deal, ways to co-market EPCglobal Class 1, Generation 2 technology to customers that demand highperformance RFID where the performance of passive RFID is limited and where active RFID technologies are too expensive or bulky. The co-developed technologies will be based on the combination of PowerID’s thin and flexible, environment-friendly battery and STMicroelectronics’ integrated-circuit family designed to support BAP technology.
